Creating An Outstanding Term Paper: Guidelines For College Students

College students often write term papers on different subjects. While the majority of students deal with this task without many problems, excellent grades, however, get only the ones who work really hard and follow particular rules. If you want to earn only high scores for your works, you should know these rules. Here they are:

  1. Select an interesting topic.
  2. This step is very important for your work. No matter what the subject is, being it finance or biology, you should choose a topic that will be interesting for you to research and write about. Try to pick topics that will be interesting to your readers too.

  3. Do your investigation.
  4. Now, that your term paper topic is chosen, you should do your best to gather all the necessary information that will help you in your work. Approach your instructor and ask them what sources you should use and where to find good books related to your topic. You may use the internet too.

  5. Develop your thesis.
  6. You should have a sentence in your paper that will resemble all the contents of your work. This is your thesis statement. Try to make it simple, short, and to the point. Consult your instructor to develop a better thesis.

  7. Outline your work.
  8. College term papers should have a solid and logical structure. To achieve this, you should make an approximate outline for your paper before you start writing. Make sure to know how many pages you’re allowed to have in your work and divide it into such sections:

    • Introduction.
    • Here you should introduce your topic and give a brief explanation on why you’ve chosen it. Persuade your readers that this topic is important and move on to your thesis statement that should be placed at the end of this section.

    • Body.
    • This section should contain detailed theoretical information about the theme you’re writing about and arguments that support your thesis statement. Use evidence from your research to make your arguments persuasive.

    • Conclusion.
    • In this part, you need only to sum up your main points. There is no need to add new arguments here. However, you may propose options for the further investigation of this subject to other college students.

  9. Write your first draft.
  10. Writing your paper, you should think about your readers. Make sure that you use clear language and don’t use too many jargon words. Include topic sentences and transitions to make your text flow smoothly.

  11. Proofread the draft.
  12. Eliminate all mistakes and rewrite weak sentences to increase the quality of your term paper.
